Sometimes you do not need a bike for a full week. You may only have one free day in Colombo and want the freedom to move around without waiting for taxis.
My name is Rimshan, owner of Rent Bikes Sri Lanka, and we regularly get messages from travellers asking for a one day bike rental in Colombo.
In this guide, I will explain what type of bike is best for one day, what you should prepare, and how to make the most of a short rental.
Can You Rent a Bike in Colombo for Just One Day?
Yes. One-day rentals are possible depending on bike availability and your pickup arrangements. They are useful for travellers who are in Colombo for a short stay, people who want to explore the coast, or customers who want to try a bike before booking it for longer.
When you contact us, send your preferred date, pickup location and approximate return time. This makes it easier to confirm the right bike and handover plan.
How Much Does a One-Day Bike Rental Cost?
The price depends on the model. Smaller automatic scooters are normally the most affordable and practical for a one-day city rental. Our entry-level scooters can start from around €7 per day, while larger scooters and motorcycles cost more.
For current options, check our available bikes and our scooter rental price guide.
Which Bike Is Best for One Day in Colombo?
If your plan is mainly city riding, I usually recommend a light automatic scooter. A Honda Dio or TVS Ntorq is simple to ride, easy to park and convenient in traffic.
If you want to ride farther south, carry luggage, or spend most of the day on the road, I would consider a Yamaha NMAX, Honda PCX or Honda ADV for extra comfort.
Tell me your plan before booking. A customer riding around Colombo needs a different bike from someone planning to ride to Bentota or Galle and back.
What Can You Do With a Bike for One Day?
A one-day rental gives you flexibility. You can explore Colombo at your own pace, ride toward Mount Lavinia, follow the coast south, visit cafés and beaches, or simply use the bike for appointments and local travel.
If you have a full day and you are an experienced rider, you can plan a longer coastal ride. Just avoid turning the day into a race. Sri Lankan roads can be busy, and the best trips include time for breaks, fuel and unexpected stops.
What Should You Bring?
Bring the documents required for your rental and make sure your driving permission is valid under the current Sri Lankan rules. Foreign travellers should check licence requirements before the day of the rental, not at the last minute.
You can read our Sri Lanka driving licence guide and International Driving Permit guide before booking.
Do You Need a Deposit for One Day?
A deposit may still be required even if you only rent for one day. The amount depends on the vehicle and booking conditions. For many of our scooters and bikes, the deposit is around €100.
Ask about the deposit, damage policy and return condition before taking the bike. A short rental should still have a clear agreement.
Can the Bike Be Delivered to Your Hotel?
Depending on your location and booking, delivery can be arranged. Send us the hotel, apartment or pickup point when you contact us.
If you are staying outside central Colombo, tell us the exact area so we can confirm the handover details.
My Tips for a Smooth One-Day Rental
- Book in advance if you know your date.
- Choose a smaller scooter for city-only riding.
- Tell us your planned route if you want to ride farther.
- Check the fuel level and bike condition before leaving.
- Confirm your return time.
- Wear a properly fitting helmet.
- Keep enough time for Colombo traffic.
Should You Choose One Day or a Longer Rental?
If you are only exploring Colombo, one day may be enough. But if you are travelling to Galle, Mirissa, Ella, Kandy or other destinations, a multi-day rental is usually more practical.
See our Sri Lanka bike rental service if you are planning a longer trip.
